Byars Clinic Fort Bragg - In the weeks and months leading up to Tuesday's ceremony to rename the Soldier and Family Medicine Clinic at Fort Bragg, Womack Army Medical Center officials reached out to the family of Pvt. Kelly W. Byars.
He won a Silver Star for his exploits in Operation Market Garden. He died in Florida in 1979.

"It was hard to find much beyond the (Silver Star) citation," said Col. Lance C. Raney, Womack's commanding officer.

The hospital was unable to locate any members of Byar's family. Then, Raney said, they would add one.
"Today we welcome Pvt. Byars back to our family," said Raney, who represented the newly named Pvt. Kelly W. Byars Clinic.
The Woodruff Street clinic is a perfect microcosm of Fort Bragg, with a mix of service members from all branches, said Air Force Col. Alesia C. Carrizales, commander of the 43rd Medical Squadron.
During a raid in Holland in 1944, Byar's unit came under machine gun and rifle fire. As the squad medic, he ran to his soldiers as they fell, running across the open field.

One of the most seriously injured was placed on Byar's back and he carried the soldier about 65 yards to safety.
"Knowing that he was a target for direct fire, he showed extraordinary courage and exposed himself to fire to save the life of a wounded man," says Byars' Silver Star citation.
According to hospital officials, Byars was chosen for the honor because of his wartime heroism and his ties to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and military medicine.
"He inspires us," Raney said. "He inspires this team and everyone who walks through these doors every day."

The ceremony to celebrate Byars coincided with the 82nd Airborne Division's annual All American Week, which honors former and current paratroopers.
Byars now joins other hospital honorees, including the medical center's namesake, Medal of Honor recipient Pfc. Bryant Womack, a Mill Spring native who won the nation's highest award for bravery in the Korean War.
Other clinics are named after Spc. 5 Lawrence Joel, a Vietnam War Medal of Honor veteran from Winston-Salem; Gen. Roscoe Robinson Jr., former commander of the 82nd Airborne Division and the first African American to achieve the rank of four-star general; and Lumberton-educated Elkton native Col. Womack Medical Center maintains the tradition of naming its clinics after North Carolina natives, including Sgt. 1st Class Lawrence Joel and Col. Mildred I. Clark Medical Center. Byars is now among those clinics.

US Private Kelly W. Byars received the Silver Star for valor in action while serving with A Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, in action on 20 September 1944 in the Netherlands.
Alpha Company's 1st Platoon led the attack and the left flank came under machine gun and rifle fire, resulting in several men being seriously wounded. Private Byars of the Aid Man Platoon saw the men fall and rushed to their aid on open ground, swept by automatic weapons and rifle fire.
During this action Private Byars came under enemy fire. He knew he was the target of a target, but he showed exceptional courage and was shot to save the life of a wounded man. His stern conduct was not only in keeping with the high traditions of the service, but also with humanity.
