It is located in southwestern Idaho in Elmore County on a desert plateau between two major mountain ranges at an elevation of 2,996 feet above sea level. Mountain Home AFB is located approximately 50 miles southeast of Boise and 95 miles northwest of Twin Falls, Idaho.
There is only one airport within 60 miles of the base, and that is Boise Airport. Make sure a sponsor picks you up as there is no public transport from the airport to the base apart from a very expensive limited taxi service. 1. I-84 West from Twin Falls - Take Exit 95 to Mountain Home/Fairfield to the American Legion. Continue down American Legion (about 2 miles) left one way onto Main Street. Continue on Main Street, which becomes ID-67 for approximately 10 miles to the front gate of MHAFB.

2. I-84 East from Boise - Take Exit 90 to Mountain Home/Bruneau to ID-51. Continue on ID-51 for approximately 7 miles through the town of Mountain Home. ID-51 will become ID-67; continue approx. 10 miles to the front gate of MHAFB.
If traveling with a non-KTP holder in a separate vehicle, they must have a federally accepted STAR license, insurance and STAR registration and check in at the entrance gate visitor center to the right of the gate.
Guards will perform 100% ID checks at all gates. All visitors must have a valid military ID or proceed to the Visitor Control Center to obtain a passport.
If you are coming to Mountain Home AFB by commercial means, you must call the sponsor from the visitor center, at the main gate. Your sponsor or unit representative will arrange transportation to the base, or a base taxi can be reached at 1 (208) 828-2215. If you arrive by taxi, the taxi driver must be sponsored to the installation by a member of the military through the visitor center, Monday to Friday 0730 to 1630 except public holidays and family days. Outside of the hours listed above, visitor passes may be obtained at the main gate or by calling 1 (208) 828-2256 for assistance.

Your sponsor will be able to answer your questions about the base and community, as well as the process. Review the process with your unit's command support personnel during normal business hours. All mandatory procedures and appointments will be planned for you through CSS. In most cases, the orientation and basic training program will be completed within 15 working days of arrival.

Most students will attend the Mountain Home School District near the base. Although these are all public schools, Mountain Home AFB Primary School is located on base. All others are off base in several Mountain Home and Pine, Idaho, areas; Children will receive a bus service if they live more than 1.5 miles from the school.

Mountain Home Air Force Base is about 3,000 feet above sea level, the climate has fluctuated with the heat. The high temperature ranges from 85-100 degrees and the bottom hovers between 45-60 degrees. Winter highs average 45 degrees, with lowest temperatures around 24 degrees. Summers are short, hot, dry, and mostly clear, and winters are very cold, dry, and partly cloudy. Make sure to keep a light jacket in the car for cool summer nights, and invest in a warm winter jacket for the occasional snowy day.
