Delta Force Hk416 - The actual rifle is a variation only seen with the CAG/Delta Force. The "tanodized" finish and use of top quality parts make it - in my eyes - the best service gun in use today.

As regular readers will know from previous blogs about this 416, it has been on a long journey. I bought the HAO V2 HK416D kit when I didn't know what was legal for the CAG build.

However, I later asked for help from Tan_Rifle: a man who knows a lot about the CAG 416. He gave me a lot of information to help with the build; some are open source and some are "specialist".

Now, note that I started with the black HAO V2 HK416D. I need to make it look tanodized...

I have very few options to get the right tanned look. To actually have an anodized bronze receiver will be fraught with difficulty. HAO released a limited "CAG" of HK416D receiver aircraft, but with all due respect, the bronze game isn't what it used to be.

Now what to do with the applied HAO trade that will be covered with paint? The solution appears as a white coat. A friend who owns a laser engraver came up with a plan: the laser would burn off the top layer of paint, leaving a white layer that shows the thoroughness of the HK commercial mold.

Choosing Cerakote brings more problems. First and foremost, there is a clear difference between anodizing and paint. The second coat of white makes the finished coat very thick. So some sculpts are less clear and layering is easy.

Another key learning was that I filled the fire selector indicator with enamel. I have to use acrylic.

I also mistakenly asked for "Sterling" instead of "Ashburn" on the right side of the case. For the detail-oriented person, this is a mistake that can eat away at your soul if you let it. I'm not 100% happy with how things turned out, I freely admit. I was hoping for metallic bronze with green or gray undertones. I ended up having heavy chocolate.

Back in the day - before I was hooked on EOTechs - I loved the red dot. In the early days of the build, I used the Holosun HS403G. I have one lying around and it is compatible with Aimpoint Micro accessories which is a big win for me.

After seeing Tan_Rifle's 1.93″ Geissele Super Precision mount for the Aimpoint Micro in the real steel 416 clone, I decided to do the same thing - but with the lower 1/3 Geissele mount in the Wilcox .410 clone. This is an alternative to the EOTech XPS setup synonymous with the new CAG reference image.

The problem with some modern Aimpoint Micro mounts - Geissele included - is that they have two recoil lugs - not one. So I had to have an extra milled slot on the Wilcox .410 clone.

Looking back is a huge effort for something I haven't used in a very long time because pretty soon EXPS and I haven't looked back! It's all good learning and experience though.

It was just a small bump in the road. My Wilcox clone lost zero when it was deleted. This is not an issue with RS, and you can read the review that inspired me, a long time ago, from Joe Jensen of STAS (formerly HHK):

No problems dealing with Rich at The Reptile House and the RS Larue 5/8″ LT101 is on its way to me.

Great kit and also thanks to upp3rz_d0wn3rz for the mount ID on this tanodized 416 pic:

Using a 5/8″ vertical and tall optics, I became a big fan of heads-up shooting. Target acquisition is faster and more natural. It also really improves the ease of shoulder transition and puts less pressure on the neck. Another advantage is that I have never interfered with my stake in Peltors.

I "burned" some areas to make that dirty, exposed carbon visible - using my secret recipe.

I got some help from Tan_Rifle again when he gave me a picture showing how suppressed the 416 throws back the gas.

I still have an old kosher safe M600C flashlight, but it is way underpowered compared to modern lights.

So I bought the 1500 lumen safe and almost nuclear tanodized M600DF, I love it!

I used it to open the Element Clone LA5 PEQ15 as it is the most halal I have found and has a working IR laser. But it can't maintain zero, it has no IR light and the texture of the house is not 100%.

But - just for functionality - I bought a new FMA UHP. The controls are solid, the IR indicator is spot on, and it has a true IR illuminator. Unfortunately, the latter is useless because of the strobes. So I'll probably be looking for a real PEQ15 in the future.

K Vs Hk416: Which Is Better?

After a while I got tired of the Surefire remote so I switched to the Dual Switch. And with the change to FMA, PEQ can finally open a real double switch.

I swapped out the Systema charging handle for a Geissele Airborne Charging Handle (ACH) clone, but since seeing Rich's photo of the RS Reptile House, I've been wanting to buy one myself.

According to Geissele's site, the ACH is a good choice for the RS SBR because it has a gas damping lip/fence - which you can see in the image above. This directs the gas away from the shooter's face when the canister is used. SBRs seem to have a reputation for overgassing when suppressed. So even if this isn't necessary for a replica, it would be a nice personal touch.

The first cover is Systema only, painted to look like the original RAL8000 HK polymer cover. TM CAG uses the same solution, but it is wrong.

Rich at The Reptile House suggested a VFC clone of the RAL8000 HK polymer cap, so I'm opening it now and it's more original. HAO now also offers its own version.

I recently bought a VTAC MK2 sling to use on the Multicam. It's an old generation, so I think it gives it a more personal touch. It's nice to have some "operator preferences" on board and it doesn't look too cookie-cutter - right? Plus, you need a sling that works for you. Carbines are getting shorter and shorter. Short carbines have become commonplace in the world of special operations forces. Special operations call for short rifles for special purposes. When reducing barrel length, they lose speed and long-range capability. However, it still works: in close combat, the short carbine rules.

The short carbine retains the rifle's ability to meet at close range. A carbine will always outperform a submachine gun. They provide much more power and penetration than submachine guns and perform better against armor and hard obstacles. The short carbine has almost entirely replaced the SMG as the close combat weapon of choice. The United States Army currently uses several different designs and we have collected them here for you.

The CQBR and MK18 series rifles are the OGs of reliable and modern super short carbines. The Navy has developed this platform for top-level warfighters, SEALs, as well as VBSS teams, Navy EOD teams, and others. The MK18 uses a short 10.3-inch barrel that harkens back to the Colt Commando series of rifles. 10.3 appears to be the shortest barrel length for 5.56 caliber AR series rifles. That said, the latest MK18 MOD 2 uses a slightly longer 11.5 inch barrel.

This shorty measures approximately 30 inches with stock added. It's short, light and sweet. The use of a modern rail system ensures the modularity of all the accessories a modern commando needs. The MK18 became a unit beyond the Navy and found a home in the general special operations community. This small carbine is a simple solution and maintains the same logistical components as the standard M4. The operator can change the upper and make small changes to make the gun the best it can be.
