A man like Callahan, known as "Dirty Harry" for his ruthless yet effective methods, needed a weapon as big as his personality. And if Callahan tells you what that gun is, you'll know the goose is about to cook.

Dirty Harry's Smith & Wesson Model 29: The Most Famous Gun Ever?

Dirty Harry carries a Smith & Wesson Model 29 revolver chambered for 44 Magnum. S&W brought it to market in 1955 and continues to produce it today.

In 1971, every Tom, Dick, and Harry wanted one. Gun dealers had trouble stocking large caliber revolvers until S&W caught up with the demand in the early 70s. Additionally, gun shop owners can find the Model 29 revolver for less at any time.

The text originally called for a Model 29 with a 4-inch barrel. After shooting some test footage, the makers realized the barrel was too short and lacked the "phase presence" they were looking for. With a little help from S&W (who no doubt appreciated how much publicity it would be to feature one of their guns in a Clint Eastwood movie), the filmmakers got what they were looking for: an 8-3/8" A mounted.Model 29 barrel with one barrel for movie poster and the other with a 6-1/2" barrel for real shot. (The image you see in this article is the 6.5" version.)

A line of revolvers featuring the Dirty Harry model. While the new models aren't exactly identical to the originals, Smith & Wesson notes that most of them have made some improvements since they were first introduced.

Clint Eastwood Got Dirty Harry Because Frank Sinatra Hurt His Hand

Famous writer and artist Elmer Keith developed the 44 Magnum. He basically maximized its potential until the 44 Special lived up to its name, then asked S&W to produce a commercial revolver that could handle incredible power. That revolver was identified as the Model 29.

A typical .44 Magnum cartridge can achieve a muzzle velocity of 1,230 fps from a 4-inch revolver barrel. At about 100 fps faster than the speed of sound, a 240 grain bullet in 44 magnum boasts 806 ft lbs of musical energy. By comparison, the AR-15 delivers about 50% more muzzle energy than the pocketable pistol.

The longer 6-1/2” barrel makes Dirty Harry's 44 Magnum more powerful. The longer the barrel, the more time the exhaust gases have to impart energy to the bullet. Thus, a 6-1/2" barrel delivers a muzzle velocity of nearly 1,400 fps. That will deliver over 1,000 ft lbs of energy from Dirty Harry's Model 29 at close range, more powerful than even the lightest 223 Rem load!

To put it all in perspective, here's what Dirty Harry's revolver does to a 50-yard watermelon:

Magnum: The Most Powerful Handgun Cartridge, For A While

Dirty Harry was technically correct when his famous "Do I feel lucky?" monologue 44 Magnum was the "world's most powerful handgun" in 1971.

44 Magnum (and 75% more recoil), the revolver did not enter commercial production until 1983.

And the 44 Magnum is no longer the most powerful pistol. Since 1971 it has been superseded by rounds such as the 50 Action Express (1,449 ft lbs of muzzle energy), the 460 S&W Magnum (2,350 ft lbs) and the 500 S&W Magnum (2,868 ft lbs).

You wouldn't want to use that pistol for personal defense. At the very least they will be bulky, not to mention they are very heavy in terms of weight and recoil.

Dirty Harry No Gun Blank Template

In the series, Dirty Harry tells a group of rookie cops that he uses "special light" subs. He described it as having "less control and recoil than a wadcutter-equipped 357 Magnum."

You They explain that their hero uses the low power of 44 special bullets in his mammoth cannons. However, in his audio commentary

, screenwriter John Milius revealed that Eastwood really should be called a "special, lightweight charger." We can't say exactly how much lighter it will be, but at least Milius is pretty sure Dirty Harry didn't hold back.

If he did, we have no less respect for him. Dirty Harry is one of our favorite movie characters, and Dirty Harry's 44 Magnum is one of our favorite movie guns. Without them, I doubt San Francisco could have been as vibrant, Dirty Harry's Smith & Wesson Model 29, a brief history. It may be one of the most famous movie quotes of all time. "Are you feeling lucky punk?" This is what Clint Eastwood said in the movie.

Here's the real line from "Dirty" Harry Callahan: Follow yourself. But you have to ask yourself because this is the most powerful gun in the world, the .44 Magnum, and it will blow your head off. 'Am I happy?'

The monster cannon that Eastwood carried was a Smith & Wesson Model 29, and it was famous for its sound. In the film, Eastwood is actually seen in two different versions. One is an 8 3/4 inch barrel and the other is a 6 1/2 inch barrel. The script called for a 4-inch barrel, but by the time the film began, that model was no longer in production.

Another misconception is that the .44 Remington Magnum wasn't technically the "most powerful" pistol in 1970, as its size and power was actually dwarfed by the .454 Casull. But however small, the gun has since become a symbol. It is also interesting

Lee Marvin starred, but it was Eastwood's sequences that made Gun a star. It has been seen in many films, including

The interesting thing about the six-shot double-action revolver is that it was introduced in 1950.

, already 12 years have passed. Production began in 1955 and the Model 29 designation was introduced two years later.

It was indeed the most powerful "production pistol" in the world when it first came on the market, but it should be noted that there were many custom calibers that were more powerful, including the old Howdah pistol from the 19th century. there was The Model 29 was not a popular choice for most shooters because few people actually wanted such a handgun, but in 1971 that all changed.

Dirty Hairy Gun

It was a favorite weapon of choice for some law enforcement agencies and often a backup weapon for big game hunters. That all changed after the opening scene when Harry Callahan confronted that punk. After the movie came out, dealers had a hard time keeping the Model 29 in stock.

Blasts From The Past: Dirty Harry's S&w Model 29

The Model 29 lost its luster in the late 1990s when a new generation of large-frame pistols became popular, including the Desert Eagle. However, despite the suspension of other revolvers, the Model 29 is available with 4-inch and 6.5-inch barrel options. It's not cheap, but its MSRP is over $1,000. You don't have to ask yourself if you're lucky, but do you really think you can afford it?
